Hebrews

My Bible reading plan has me in Hebrews along with a few other books including Song of Songs which felt a little too awkward to start a new blog with. ;) I was pretty well confused just jumping into my reading plan in Hebrews chapter 5 today, so I'm going to start from chapter 1.
I read through chapters 1-6 just to get a feel for it. There is a lot going on for my foggy distracted brain.

No one is really clear as to who wrote Hebrews. But we know it was to the Hebrew Christians if the title is any indication. Therefore, they were probably followers of Jewish custom/Judaism before they accepted Christ. From what I understand that means they were probably very legalistic and prone to following the motions of ceremony. For example, the people that confronted Jesus about his disciples picking grain and eating on the Sabbath. And other things of that nature. It's easy to fall back into your old habits.

Chapter 1 starts off saying that in the past God spoke through prophets, but now he has spoken to us through His Son. And that the Son is greater than the angels. A lot of Old Testament verses to prove his point.
Did they really need that? Was it hard to grasp that Jesus was greater than the angels? Was it because he was man? Psalm 8 it says in vs 5 "You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings.." So because Jesus walked the earth as a man, is that where it came from. But seriously. Why the big point here? Jesus is obviously greater than the angels. He's GOD.
From what I've gathered, Jewish people just generally have a hard time accepting that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah. So, maybe that had something to do with it, but then why would the author be writing to them if they didn't believe?

Had a chat with mom and she has awesome resources.
Apparently there was a sect of Jewish people called the Qumram that thought that the power of the archangel (Michael) rivaled that of the Messiah.
According to some commentary we've read, the Jewish people in general held angels as next to God.
So that all makes a bit more sense now.

I'm so glad that I know Jesus is higher than the angels and don't have to wrestle through learning that. I'm so thankful that he made himself "lower than the angels" for a short time so he could rescue and redeem us! :)
