We left off at verse 4, I believe. We have been warned to pay attention.
The section starting at verse 5 is titled Jesus Made Like His Brothers in my NIV Bible and The Founder of Salvation on ESV online.
It starts out with:
The notes in the ESV say 'the world to come' is "a common Jewish expression for the future age in which all of God's purposes in salvation will be fulfilled.""It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come..."
The next verses contain a quote from Psalm 8:
"What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor and put everything under his feet."
(On a side note, I feel kinda awkward as I'm blogging because I don't know how to go through this without just writing the whole scriptures down. It's pretty straight forward. So bear with my awkward for a while? :P)
"But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers." vs 9-11
Jesus calls us brothers. Family.
Jesus became like us so he could save us. So he could, by his death, destroy the devil and free us who were held captive by our fear of death. He didn't do this for angels.
"For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted." vs 17 & 18
This bit was really neat to read because of what the pastor was saying on Sunday - the first three chapters of Revelation, Jesus is portrayed as our high priest. :)
Jesus had to become like us so he could die in our place. So he could relate to our humanity and thus be able to help us through it.
That the Creator of the Universe, of everything, would make such a sacrifice for us... Is still amazing to me every time I sit and think about it. I'm just in awe.
And he sees us as his family. We are "brothers" of Jesus. It's just so amazing. We mean that much to him. My family is so important to me, and that's how he feels about us!
I am truly blessed and thankful. For this great salvation that God put into play for us. That Jesus came to fulfill that role of sacrifice so we could be saved. That we could be his family. That he could help us through this life as our high priest that can relate to us.
